Representation of Women within the teen sci-fi, fantasy and action genres.

Most cultures have certain ideas about what a man or woman should be like. While these ideas have changed and evolved over the centuries, most societies still hold on at a least some traditional believes of man and womanhood. Given societys influence on media, female characters in all kind of varieties, have become more frequent. The goal of this thesis is to find specific patterns and therefore character types while focusing on teenage content within the action, superhero, fantasy and science fiction genres. By researching various literature and analysing multiple shows and films, including Twilight, Ready Player One and The Hunger Games, the thesis will explain three frequently used character types within its demographic: Damsel in Distress, the Special Girl and the Tough Girl. The aim is to understand their function, strengths and flaws and that better understanding of character types can lead to more awareness when writing female characters.
