- Influence of Art in CinemaChandola, Asmi(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2024)Datum obhajoby: 2024-09-26This is a study of how Edvard Munch learned to express himself and how this led him to become one of the pioneers of the art movement known as Expressionism. I will further explore how filmmakers learned from his techniques and utilized it in their own interpretations. I will begin by exploring Munchs childhood, career and his foray into symbolism, then dive into several films and filmmakers starting with 1920s German expressionist cinema with Robert Weines The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and and F.W. Murnaus Nosferatu, moving to its influence on Hollywood filmmakers with films like Orson Welles Citizen Kane and A Touch of Evil. I will explore how Polish filmmaker Andzrej Wajda used symbolism with his famous war trilogy, A Generation, Kanal and Ashes and Diamond, how Joel Coen paid homage to German expressionism with The Tragedy of Macbeth and how Sam Levinsons Euphoria explores human emotions externally with the genre of neon-noir. The last film I will present in this study is one of my own, my color etude exercise called Red, which I based on Edvard Munchs work and one in which I tried to channel his trauma into one of the characters psychological states.
- Influence of Geography on the Poetics of Light in FilmAnand, Harsimran Kaur(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2024)Datum obhajoby: 2024-09-26This thesis analyses the influence of Geography on the subjective, creative and emotional expression of light in a film. To develop a broad understanding on varied visual aesthetics, a comparison is made between cinematographers Santosh Sivan and Darius Khondji, who originate from and work in different parts of the world. A detailed qualitative study of the films Dil Se (1998), The Terrorist(1998), Evita (1996)and Se7en (1995) is presented using tools of Composition and Lighting for analysis. A further comparison in lieu of treatment of geography across the films reveals its impact on the Poetics of Light in the films.
