  • Lessons on Grief from Isao Takahata's Studio Ghibli and its Resonance in Live-Action

    In the world of animation, Isao Takahata occupies a special place since he creates grounded, realistic worlds with touching stories revolving around poignant concerns of life. His perspective on depicting grief is unique and offers deep insight into how to create a narrative that is able to navigate the emotion adequately. This thesis looks at Isao Takahatas filmography, with special focus to Grave of the Fireflies and The Tale of Princess Kaguya, to understand what filmmaking elements enable these stories to be told in a sensitive manner. To that effect, looking at the two films from the lens of montage, an analysis of the two films leads to a five-point framework worldbuilding, point of view of main character, capturing the internal and external conflict for the protagonist, the depiction of the grief event, and response of the protagonist to the grief event created in this study. This Grief Framework can act as scaffolding to understand if a story is able to centre grief within a narrative. Subsequently, this study uses the Grief Framework to understand how three live-action films Life is Beautiful, Pans Labyrinth, and Jojo Rabbit reference grief within the context of their stories. The study concludes with the Grief Framework offering a guiding set of considerations that can allow stories to address grief in a holistic way, with the understanding that these stories can be difficult but necessary to tell.
