- Beyond Just ActingOgawa, Mai(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Divadelní fakulta, 2022)Datum obhajoby: 2022-06-15This M.A. thesis is based on author Sai (Mai Ogawa)’s research from creating the performance “HSWD” (How to Suicide Without Dying). This paper aims to describe findings from personal, practical research into getting away from simple acting technique and performing dramatic characters toward employing personal emotional experience to devise one’s own performance. The author mostly focusses on her own findings on use of space, objects, dramaturgy and personal emotional experience in devising meaningful performance. The author also details several other experiences as co-creator and performer in other performances to enhance her findings in this thesis. The thesis also shows how exploration of these devising approaches can inform acting technique, towards an awareness the author calls “expanded acting”. Towards the end she makes some conclusions on the elements that need to be in place to create a meaningful devised performance work.
- Devising Selves Through Chaotic Performance: Explorations of Radical BlacknessDillard, Alyssa(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Divadelní fakulta, 2020)Datum obhajoby: 2020-09-17This thesis details the explorations and developments of my personal dramaturgy and performance form. The balancing of interpersonal and emotional materials; searching for connections between performers and the audience. Taking the elements from each person to add to a dramaturgy of performance that pulls from individual stimuli but works as a collective for the performance. Acknowledging the difference of personal history and perspective but finding a way to meet for conversations. The dramaturgy of connection, and acceptance of difference. From rehearsal moments, artistic inspirations, and outside stimuli; that all led to the form of art that is currently being developed and shown. In this thesis I explore several performances that inspired the development of my personal performative structure. Throughout this thesis I also go into the differences in the world of American theatre performance and education that I came from before my studies in Prague. Exploring the differences in what is expected from the artist/performer and what is being explored. In this exploration there is also the examination of cultural difference and personal identity. Going through a variety of question that come from learning a new form of devising and dramaturgy in a foreign country and the cultural, historical, and racial expectations and impulses that exist throughout this process.
- Experiencing Ourselves BehavingBurgerhoudt, Eva Rosemarijn(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Divadelní fakulta, 2019)Datum obhajoby: 2019-06-19This M.A. thesis is based on the author Eva Rosemarijn Burgerhoudt’s practical research from creating the performance Go Away - See if I’m There. The aim of this paper is to describe the findings regarding experiencing human behaviour in the theatre, through analysing the process and results of this performance. The author mostly uses personal experiences, as well as conversations with performers and attendees of the performance. In addition to this main research she uses behavioural theory from Robert Sapolsky, and theory from Richard Schechner and Hans-Thies Lehmann about the relationship between the performers and the attendees in performances. The author also uses several other experiences as a creator, dramaturg, performer and attendee from other performances as examples in this thesis. Towards the end she makes some conclusions on what mechanisms and elements have to be in place in order to create space and time to experience human behaviour in the theatre, in addition to an exploration of how these findings can be developed in future work.
