The thesis examines three celebrated film adaptations of William Shakespeares Macbeth: Roman Polanski's Macbeth (1971), Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957), and Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool (2003). With each adaptation originating from a different country, this thesis analyses how each director's cultural background and historical context influenced their interpretation of Shakespeare's play. The comparison focuses on four main aspects: cultural context (how each film reflects the socio-political climate and cultural values of its time and
place); visual language (the cinematography, colour palettes, and visual symbolism used in each adaptation); performance styles (how acting techniques and character portrayals differ across the films); deviations from the text (the ways in which each adaptation alters or expands upon Shakespeare's original narrative). Key findings include how Polanski's version reflects the violence and disillusionment of late 1960s America; how Kurosawa's adaptation incorporates elements of Japanese Noh theatre and explores themes of fate; and how Bhardwaj's film addresses themes of religious tension and forbidden love in transposing the story to the Mumbai underworld. The thesis concludes that successful adaptations create a dialogue between the original text, the filmmaker's vision, and their cultural zeitgeist, rather than simply aiming for fidelity to the source material. By examining the cinematography, colour palettes, visual symbolism, acting techniques, and narrative alterations in each film, the thesis provides insights into how filmmakers can use various cinematic tools to reinterpret classic literature in culturally specific ways. This comprehensive, cross-cultural examination contributes to the field of adaptation studies by highlighting the complex interplay between source text, directorial vision, and cultural context in the process of adaptation.
