This thesis explores the concept of coming-of-age and the portrayal of adolescence in HBOs
Euphoria, with a specific focus on its first season. Through a detailed analysis of its aesthetics,
narrative structure, mise-en-scène, and cultural impact, this research examines how the series
diverges from the conventions of the traditional Teen TV genre, presenting the challenges of
growing up in todays social media-driven age. Drawing on semiotics, gender studies, and
media theory, the thesis investigates key concepts such as the fracture of identity (examining
representations of the body on screen, including its gendered meanings, abjection, and
degradation), the aesthetics of space (analyzing how mise-en-scène constructs a teenage
fantasy), and auteur theory alongside the transmediality of the series (mediated representation
and the reappropriation of aesthetics). A key finding of this research is how Euphoria departs
from traditional coming-of-age narratives, where characters overcome obstacles and emerge
profoundly changed or matured. Instead, the series portrays a sense of hopelessness within
Generation Za demographic shaped by global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic,
economic instability, and political turbulence. This generational disillusionment is reflected in
Euphorias heightened focus on escapism and emotional authenticity, resonating deeply with
its audience through its raw, stylized depiction of teenage experiences.
