In documentary theory, distinguishing between fiction and documentary films can be challenging, often leading to misclassification. One filmmaker affected by this issue is Colombian director and editor Luis Ospina, whose work is frequently labeled as fiction rather than documentary. This study examines Ospina's editing methods in his mockumentary trilogy and uses Bill Nichols' documentary theories to argue that his films should be considered documentaries. The project explores the history of documentary theory, defines documentary films according to Nichols' theories, provides context on the history of Colombian cinema, and analyzes each film in Ospina's mockumentary trilogy compared to Nichols' criteria. The findings show that Ospina's trilogy aligns with Nichols' concept of documentary films, particularly fitting within the reflexive documentary mode. This study contributes to the definition of mockumentaries and encourages further research to explore and propose new alternatives that enhance existing theories.
