SubtitleCommentary to the play Eduard : theoretical section of the diploma theses.-

Abstract in different languageIn 1966 Václav Havel presented the first version of his one act play with the working title "Eduard" as his "diploma" thesis. The Commentary to the play "Eduard" (the theoretical part of the work) is an analysis of the author´s own dramatic methods, in which he tries to recapitulate "starting points, from which work on "Eduard" began, realize the basic outline of the play´s theme, characterize its structure and the meaning of this structure and formulate some of the most important problems which I will have to deal with in my subsequent work"- writes the author in his introduction to the Commentary. The main theme of the play relates to the problem of the disintegration of human identity as the basic problem of modern man. The author dealt with this theme in his previous plays, "here I want it to have the character of modern man´s relationship with the world; I wish to reach a sort of "philosophical" dimension of the problem: see a non-identical man on the background of his overall experience of the world, how he is constituted in the era in which we live." In the play Havel employed his "penchant for construction" when he used the destruction of the time-space continuum of the dramatic story and by "mixing up" the scenes he created their new, artificial composition. ("Where there is no identity, there can´t be continuity..."). He described the succession of sequences in his work with several diagrams which depict the development and interconnection of the story. In his introduction the author said about the play (already called "Impeded Possibility of Concentration"), which was published together with the author´s two preceding plays "Memorandum" and "Garden Party" in the exile Rozmluvy press in 1986: "...the plays are all about man?s impeded possibility to be himself in this day and age, that is to keep his own identity. If I am to summarize it, today my plays from the 60s seem to me to be happy reflections on the impeded possibilities of mankind." Karel Kraus writes about the work: "The whole diploma thesis, especially its theoretical part, dramatically surpasses the common level of graduate works. It is an excellent example of Havel´s theoretical thinking and (apparently regarding the purpose for which the study was created) offers an extremely instructive (in places even too educational, which makes it all the more useful) view into the constitutive components of the author?s creative type (including ever present self-reflection if not a polemic with his own artistic principles)".en
