- Listening Toward the Voice: Hamaguchi Ryusuke's Articulation of SpeechChen, Yu-Ying(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2024)Datum obhajoby: 2024-09-06This thesis investigates the unique use of speech in Hamaguchi Ryusuke's films through the frameworks of Emmanuel Levinas's concept of Visage and Michel Chion's theory of the three modes of listening. Hamaguchis films are distinguished by the beauty of the human voice and the strategic articulation of speech to offer diverse listening experiences for the audience. By analyzing Hamaguchis narrative layout and his unique approach to speech, the study reveals how the act of listening is integral to his cinematic expression. Key scenes from his films demonstrate how different articulations of speech and modes of listeningcausal, semantic, and reducedcontribute to the depth and authenticity of his cinematic expression, highlighting the roles of the narrator, interlocutor, and reciter. The research delves into the sound phenomenon in the voice of speech in film. This approach highlights the integral role of speech in shaping the narrative and sound landscape of Hamaguchi's films, offering a fresh perspective on the significance of listening in cinema.
