- Identity Crisis and the Transmediality of the Teenage Experience:Angelova, Anastasiya(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2025)Datum obhajoby: 2025-06-13This thesis explores the concept of coming-of-age and the portrayal of adolescence in HBOs Euphoria, with a specific focus on its first season. Through a detailed analysis of its aesthetics, narrative structure, mise-en-scène, and cultural impact, this research examines how the series diverges from the conventions of the traditional Teen TV genre, presenting the challenges of growing up in todays social media-driven age. Drawing on semiotics, gender studies, and media theory, the thesis investigates key concepts such as the fracture of identity (examining representations of the body on screen, including its gendered meanings, abjection, and degradation), the aesthetics of space (analyzing how mise-en-scène constructs a teenage fantasy), and auteur theory alongside the transmediality of the series (mediated representation and the reappropriation of aesthetics). A key finding of this research is how Euphoria departs from traditional coming-of-age narratives, where characters overcome obstacles and emerge profoundly changed or matured. Instead, the series portrays a sense of hopelessness within Generation Za demographic shaped by global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic instability, and political turbulence. This generational disillusionment is reflected in Euphorias heightened focus on escapism and emotional authenticity, resonating deeply with its audience through its raw, stylized depiction of teenage experiences.
- Mark Travis' Interrogation ProcessViana, Vasco(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2023)Datum obhajoby: 2023-06-09This thesis examines Mark Travis’ Interrogation Process as a new directing tool for professional Directors working with Actors today, in the digital age. As a methodology developed in the 21st century and aimed primarily at film Directors, Mark Travis’ Interrogation Process allows the Director to bypass the Actor’s thinking mind by interrogating the Character, with the objective of triggering authentic responses through the Character’s emotional memory. This thesis provides an in-depth, step-by-step guide and analysis of the Interrogation Process, as well as critical reflection on its historical roots and its potential use in the work of professional Directors today. This research extends to Zoom interviews with professional Directors and Actors who are already familiar with, or have used, the Interrogation Process in their work with Actors, as well as a personal (Zoom) interview with Academy Award winning Director Agnieszka Holland, to establish a counterpoint between Mark Travis’ Interrogation Process and other contemporary approaches to directing Actors for film.
- The films of Abdellatif KechicheLyubynetska, Anna Nuriya(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2017)Datum obhajoby: 2017-10-06This thesis studies the directing and scriptwriting work of French-Tunisian director Abdellatif Kechiche. In this thesis, the director’s five feature films will be analyzed based on such elements as narrative structures, themes, visual and sound language and construction of characters. On the basis of a close study of these elements, the thesis will analyze the stylistic choices, which form Kechiche’s directing as well as the tools he uses to create new realist films in contemporary France. Abdellatif Kechiche explains that he doesn’t want his cinema “to look like life, I want it to actually be life. Real moments of life, that's what I'm after." (Romney, 2013) This thesis will analyze the meaning of this statement.
