Practice As Research: The Analysis of a Linguistic Aspect of Theatre Through Acting Workshops

Abstrakt
Many studies have been carried out on understanding the complexity of languages and language acquisition. Recently, the Embodied Language Theory, a subfield of Cognitive Linguistics, has come to prominence in linguistic research. This theory connects body and mind and demonstrates through neuroscientific research the embodiment of languages and meanings. The Embodied Theory has also found its place in arts research, working on the same premises of body-mind connections, but also on the embodied connection between performer and audience. However, the field of embodied arts and languages remains significantly unexplored. This research focuses on studying what might affect the performance of bilingual actors and actors performing in second languages, aiming to better understand the role of languages. For my thesis, I gathered data through practice as research in the form of acting workshops and analysed them using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The goal was to examine the position of language in the performer, categorize the data into group phenomena, and draft a pedagogical approach that would enable second language and bilingual actors to achieve higher levels of performance authenticity. As part of practice as research, I included my personal reflections in the findings as well. The findings indicate that bilingual actors from Malta make choices based on habitual preferences that may be also connected to Maltas colonial history, in contrast to second language actors, whose second language appears disembodied, and thus disconnected from emotions. The phenomena that emerged also highlighted that both groups of performers and their linguistic bases are influenced by their past and current environments. Finally, linguistic awareness in artistic work represented a new approach for both groups to achieve higher authenticity in acting and in case of second language actors to potentially connect their second languages with emotions.
